Why Sri Lanka Amazed My Kids and Hubby #wanderlust

Why Sri Lanka Amazed My Kids and Hubby  #wanderlust

I am Simran, residing in Lajpat Nagar with my husband Rakesh and our 2 kids. This winter holidays, we wanted to go on a family trip somewhere outside India. We thought of going to some place that will not cost us a bomb and also give us a unique experience.

We had the options of Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Sri Lanka. I love beaches, and my husband is a fan of history and architecture.
Eventually, after a lot of debate, we chose Sri Lanka as our first foreign destination, I do not regret it one bit! A mix of spiritual, wildlife, nature and beaches, Sri Lanka promised to be an adventure of a lifetime, and so it was.

We landed at the international airport of Bandaranaike, where we were greeted by our travel expert. We had a quick check-in at the Hotel and went to see our first spot, Sigiriya. We were told that it is also known as the Lion Rock - and you can figure out from a distance why so, because the rock is so huge that it is visible from miles away. The history of the place and its archaeological importance had some great insights, and we looked at some interesting rock inscriptions as well.

The next day, we were on our way to Kandy, one of the most popular spots in Sri Lanka. The city tour was a very complete experience as we got to know a lot about the history and its people. The highlight of the day was the cultural dance we witnessed in the evening, and my children really loved it! Along with the visit to Spice Garden and a herbal massage experience, our day was well spent.

A new day, a new destination. We were enroute Nuwara Eliya, also known as The Little England. Being from Calcutta, Rakesh has seen a lot of British architecture and history, and hence was really excited to be here. It did not disappoint us, the area was fantastic and surreal like traveling back in time, as we went for the city tour, I could see rosy gardens, Victorian post offices and seamless tea plantations. The next stop was Gregory's lake, and the boat ride is a must do for a family outing.

The next day was completely dedicated to my children. We visited the Yala National Park, where we had booked a jeep safari. Our driver was quick enough to respond to leopard sightings and drive to it - we spotted 2! We also saw some Elephants and some birds, and It was a thrilling outing, a good picnic day for the family.

For someone who is a patron of art and loves to experience cultures, the next day was a delight. We went ahead with our journey to Galle, a picturesque Dutch city. I should tell you, if you have a day in Sri Lanka, please choose Galle! We were mesmerized by its history, and our tour of the stilt fishermen community. We spent the rest of the day building sand castles at the beach in Bentota, an absolute delight for the kids!

Our last stop was Colombo, the absolute destination on every Sri Lankan travel list. There is something very soothing and calming about the sea, and the beaches in Colombo are perfect for long walks! If the beaches do not interest you, we also took a city tour in a double decker bus, which was surprisingly fun. Not only is Colombo a mix of Colonial history and modern day sprawl of markets, Colombo in its heart has the best local seafood, and amazing southern beaches. A fitting end to the whole experience.

One of my priorities was making the holiday travel enjoyable for my whole family, and I got a mix of all things on this trip.

I take back memories of not only witnessing leopards, learning about the history of Sri Lanka or the examples of hospitality, but memories that bring my family closer. For anyone who is looking for an affordable foreign destination, Sri Lanka is one of the best options. You can go there with your family, or on a romantic getaway, it works. I would highly recommend enjoying local food (as well as fresh vegetables and exotic fruits), cultural experiences like dance shows and herbal massage, and sightseeing of Galle and Colombo are not to be missed, along with the wildlife safari at Yala.
