"Manoneeta (Traveller) - Thanks a ton TripShelf !! This was the most amazing experience for me. Will cherish the memories forever."

Paragliding - the closest humans can get to the experience of flying like a bird.

History - Paragliding grew out of parachuting. In the 1960s, the military needed to train parachutists how to perform safe landings. Repeatedly going up and down in an airplane to drop the parachutists was complicated and time-consuming. Many parachutists soon became more interested in the floating part than the landing part. For fun, they would launch themselves off steep hills and parachute to the ground below, experimenting with ways to stay in the air longer. Developed by Domina Jalbert in 1964, the shape of the chute was modified and it went from round to rectangular.
The first time it had been done was back in 1978. Three friends in France used the modified parachutes to jump off a mountainside and glide to the ground. And thus, a new sport was born.

Bir Billing - Bir is situated in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh India in Baijnath region. Billing is situated at 2500 m, 14 kms from Bir (1500 m). Bir billing is one of the natural wonders. It is not only perfectly designed as a launch pad, but also gives the splendid panaromic view of the Dhauladhar mountain range & Kangra valley beneath you. Bir is the 2nd best paragliding destination in the world, after Lake Como in Italy.
Bir hosted the first ever Paragliding World Cup on Oct 23, 2015. This year the World Cup is taking place from 24th-31st October.

Before we learn more about Paragliding at Bir, let’s understand what is Paragliding, and how is it different from other aero sports.

What is Paragliding?
It is an adventure sport of flying paragliders; which are lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure. You lay out a wing on a hillside or mountain, inflate it over your head like a kite, run a few steps and before you know it you've stepped off into the sky! Once in the air, the pilot is able to maintain and even gain altitude using lifting air currents and thermals. Landing a paraglider is extremely easy. A pilot simply steers it into the landing area, and glides down for a very gentle touch down back onto earth.

1. Solo Paragliding : In solo paragliding, pilot flies alone in paraglider. Pilot is specially trained to parasailing alone in the sky which requires training, technique and experience.

2. Tandem Paragliding : The flight is for 2 people at a time; a pilot and a passenger. Each person has their own harness, which are attached together for maximum safety. The passenger can just sit back, relax and enjoy the view.

Paragliding v/s Hang Gliding
> Paragliding and Hang Gliding both are non powered aircrafts. Where the paraglider has a not so rigid structure (more like a parachute), hang glider’s rigidity (V shaped structure) makes it a heavier and faster equipment, making it possible to take off even in stronger wind conditions. In paragliding, the pilot sits below the wing, in a harness that is connected to the wing and he steers by pulling the brake lines. Where in hang gliding, the pilot lies in a prone position and manoeuvres with the help of a bar that he holds onto in-flight.

Paragliding v/s Parasailing
> The main difference between these two sports is that paragliding is a flying sport with a free-flying, foot-launched aircraft and in parasailing, the person is towed behind a motored vehicle (usually a boat) while being attached to a parachute.

Paragliding v/s Sky diving
> The equipment used in paragliding and skydiving are the same, but they are used in different forms. In simpler terms, skydiving is about a free fall from a plane for a while before opening the parachute, and paragliding is about launching yourself from the slope of a hill, mountain or a cliff.

Once you’ve made up your mind to take up this thrilling sport, go through these FAQs to be more prepared and ready to go!
